Steinkirchen is a western district of the city of Wassenberg in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Heinsberg . Administratively it belongs to the district of Ophoven and is located between Ophoven and Effeld . The Baalerbach and the Rur flow west of Steinkirchen .
history
The Second World War was over on February 28, 1945 in Steinkirchen when American troops marched in. On January 1, 1972, the community of Ophoven, to which Steinkirchen belonged until then, was incorporated into the community of Wassenberg.
St. Martinus
The Catholic Church of St. Martinus (or St. Martini), which is dedicated to the soldier and Bishop Martin von Tours , is worth seeing . Together with the Herz-Jesu-Kirche in Effeld, it belongs to the Catholic parish of St. Martinus Steinkirchen-Effeld.
In 1118 a church in Steinkirchen was first mentioned in a document. The late Gothic tower from the 16th century is still preserved. The current neo-Gothic building was erected in 1871 and restored from 1954 to 1955 after severe damage from the Second World War .
