Ludwig Schaffrath

Ludwig Schaffrath (born July 13, 1924 in Alsdorf ; † February 6, 2011 in Bardenberg ) was a German sculptor , painter (especially glass painting ) and university professor.

Schaffrath attended the Schlütter School in Nienborg - Heek (factory school for Christian art) from 1946 to 1947 . He then worked until 1954 as an assistant to Anton Wendling at the chair of freehand drawing in the architecture department of the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen . In 1975 he led the master class at Burleighfield House in Loudwater , England. This was followed from 1976 to 1978 teaching activities in Berkeley and at the Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood , Washington, as well as thirteen lecture tours in the United States.

In 1981 he also taught at Adelaide University and at the Caulfield Institute of Technology in Melbourne , from 1981 to 1984 and again in 1997 in Tokyo, Kyoto, on Okinawa, Osaka. From the 1985 summer semester he took over the professorship for glass design and painting, which had been vacant since the winter semester (successor to Hans Gottfried von Stockhausen ) at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart , an office which he held until his retirement in 1993. Among his students there, Thierry Boissel , Susanne Feix , Katja Ploetz , Raphael Seitz and Gabi Weiß emerged as glass designers .

Ludwig Schaffrath lived and worked in his hometown of Alsdorf, which in 1999 granted him honorary citizenship and the city's ring of honor. He found his final resting place in Aachen's St. Joseph Church of the Holy Sepulcher .

Schaffrath embellished several churches and other facilities in Geilenkirchen and the surrounding area with glass windows and other works, including the Church of St. Josef Bauchem, the Franziskusheim and the Parish Church of Immendorf .

  • St. Michael Schweinfurt: glass window of the church interior (1968)
  • Monastery of the Maria Schutz church in Kaiserslautern: windows in the cloister and church [1998/2000]
  • Sankt Gregorius in Aachen: vestibule, cross on the nave and glass surfaces of the facade.
  • German Glass Painting Museum in Linnich: Entrance front / glazing (1997).
  • St. Leonhard in Frankfurt: 3 choir windows [1993] In St. Leonhard there are a total of 23 Schaffrath windows, which were made between 1990 and 1993. Lit .: Oidtmann 1997, illustration p. 239.

  • St. Lucia Broichweiden: All windows, except the side window of the tower chapel, starting with the 3 central choir windows (1970) to the tracery skylights in the transverse exits (1995). The ceiling decoration was created from 1993 to 1995 and the altar mosaic in 1995.
  • Aachen Cathedral : cloister at the cathedral - a total of 32 windows. (1962–1965), 3 windows in the vestibule - skylights over the portals (1997).
  • Omiya, train station , entrance hall, window wall 440 × 1250 cm. (1982).
  • Osaka - Japan: Decoration of the new train station with a mosaic (1983).
  • St. Josef (Aachen) , in today's Church of the Holy Sepulcher, 21 windows were built between 1971 and 1975
  • From 2005 the series Schwanengesang was created . These are glass steles with a size of 2.50 m × 1.00 m. All deal with topics that Ludwig Schaffrath accompanied during his artistic career. Some are a tribute to people who have influenced his life's work very much.
