The Church of St. Lucia.

St. Lucia is a church in Broichweiden , a district of Würselen in the Aachen city region , and is consecrated to St. Lucia . The three-aisled, neo-Gothic church was built from 1900 according to plans by the Cologne architect Theodor Roß and placed under monument protection in 1983 . With approx. 5000 Catholic Christians, the parish of St. Lucia is the second largest in the parish of St. Sebastian Würselen in the diocese of Aachen .

Building history

Ceiling shape of the church interior

Because the old church of St. Jodokus had become too small for the growing community, Pastor Ferdinand Schiefgen had been planning a new church since 1889. Pastor Heinrich Joseph Hubert Westenberg later founded a church building association so that construction of the new church could begin on September 1, 1900. Due to the adverse conditions at the construction site, the foundations had to be laid at different depths, so that the foundation stone could only be laid in 1902. The rib vault was the most difficult part of the job, because the delicate construction was not easy to work with and therefore had to be handled with the utmost care. In the construction of the entire roof structure and the vault, similarities to the Peterskirche in Cologne-Ehrenfeld can be seen, which the master builder Theodor Roß took as a model for the new building in Broichweiden. A total of 150 cubic meters of wood was built into the tower of the church, because the design by master builder Roß also called for a 31-meter-high spire on the brick tower. It took a month to work on this tip and the final placement of the construction on the masonry of the tower took three weeks.

In April 1904 the new church was occupied. Items such as the organ and the altar , were from the old to become small church adopted. The new building was only consecrated on June 23, 1906 by the then Cardinal Antonius Fischer . The total construction costs amounted to approx. 147,000 Reichsmarks.

In October 1944 the church was badly damaged by artillery fire, so that during the reconstruction work in the 1950s the top of the helmet was no longer built. To this day, St. Lucia has only a half-finished church tower .

Bells

During the war two of the three bells were seized. The largest of the bells from that time remained in the belfry , but was badly damaged by the bombardment. The original peal was composed of the tones es - ges - as . So it seemed sensible to have three new bells made for the church to add to the remaining es- bell. The Mabilon bell foundry from Saarburg near Trier was commissioned with this task . Today's ringing consists of four bells (c ', es', f ', g'). The heaviest of these is the Christ bell with 2,350 kg, followed by the Marien bell with approx. 1,450 kg, the bell consecrated to Saint Lucia with 1,000 kg and the bell consecrated to Saint Jodokus and Salmanus with 700 kg. All four bells are cast from bronze.

Interior

The painted ceiling.
View of the altar.

The Alsdorfer artist Ludwig Schaffrath created many items of equipment of the church, including the apse located altarpiece as well as the windows and the bluish ceiling painting. The painted ceiling symbolizes heaven and the connection between God and man. The altarpiece symbolizes the earth in its turmoil. The altar and the ambo, which are made of hewn stone, are works by the Aachen sculptor Klaus Iserlohe . The cross is believed to be a late Baroque work from 1780 and probably once served as a wayside cross . It is on loan from the diocese of Aachen . A Way of the Cross from 1904 is attached to the walls of the church . A central motif is the twelve-armed Lucia chandelier by Klaus Iserlohe. The baptismal font lid was created by Ludwig Schaffrath and is reminiscent of a labyrinth of pipes that are supposed to symbolize a water pipe.
