Bell foundry Mabilon

Bell foundry museum at the foot of the Saarburg

The Mabilon bell foundry in Saarburg has been family-owned since 1590, the family came from Saumur on the Loire . From there, bells were cast on the journey . At that time, the problem of transporting the heavy bells over long distances was circumvented by casting in front of the church. The first preserved Mabilon bell in Germany was cast in the Sauerland during the Thirty Years' War in 1639. In 1770 Urbanus Mabilon settled in Saarburg and founded a permanent foundry. The art of bell-casting has been passed on from generation to generation as a carefully guarded secret to this day. Bells were still cast in Saarburg until December 2002. Today the foundry has been preserved as a museum.
