The Catholic Church of St. Antonius is a landmark of the Oberkassel district of Düsseldorf and is located in a central warehouse not far from the Oberkasslerbrücke on Luegallee. Church patron is Anthony of Padua .

Architecture and building history

St. Antonius is a three - aisled neo - Romanesque basilica with two main towers and a tower structure above the crossing, consisting of a large tower with a rectangular base section and four small corner towers. The architecture is based on the early Romanesque style. Located directly on Luegallee , the church with its towers has a decisive influence on the street scene and is located in the immediate vicinity of the district town hall. In the early plans for the new Oberkassel facility, the center of the new district was planned.

The church was built from 1909 to 1910 according to a design by the Düsseldorf architect Josef Kleesattel . The interior equipment was more economical than originally planned due to lack of money. A comprehensive renovation and restoration began in 1974, which also repaired bomb damage from the Second World War. From 1984 the interior was renovated and redesigned, among others based on designs by Gerhard Wind . The work was completed in 1986.

Since January 1, 2015, St. Antonius has been the parish church for the merged parish of St. Antonius and Benediktus , which covers the area of Düsseldorf on the left bank of the Rhine. Other churches belong to the parish of St. Benediktus in Heerdt , St. Maria Hilfe der Christisten in Lörick , St. Anna in Niederkassel and the "Bunkerkirche" St. Sacrament am Handweiser, which is additionally revitalized by a new usage concept. (see usage by the Coptic community )

A large collection of modern paraments, created by the artists Ingrid Heinz and Jeanette Karbig, initiated by the current parish priest, contribute to the solemnity of the Eucharistic celebrations. A pastoral focus of the congregation is promoting re-entry into the church. There is great veneration for the Blessed Mother, St. Judas Thaddäus and St. Pope John Paul II. The portrait of this Pope is in the front area of the parish church.

Noteworthy are an ambo , an Easter candlestick, a lectern at the priest's seat and a tabernacle for the Holy Oils, created by Paul Nagel. The Way of the Cross was taken over from the profaned Christ the King Church in Oberkassel. A Mary icon in a conche also comes from the dissolved Christ the King Church.

Organ system

The St. Antonius Church has a three-part organ system, consisting of a choir organ near the side altar and a large organ on the gallery, as well as a remote control above the crossing dome. The system was built by the organ construction company Mühleisen (Leonberg). Most of the pipe material for the main and choir organ comes from previous instruments from the Antonius and Christ the King Churches in Oberkassel. The construction of the organs was supported by financial means from the Pastoral and Church Music Foundation of the parish of St. Antonius and Benediktus.

Choir organ

The new choir organ in the transept was completed and inaugurated in 2012. The organ work consists largely of pipe material from an instrument that was built in 1899 by the organ builder Eggert (Paderborn) and installed in a modified form in the Christ the King Church in Oberkassel in 1999. After the Christ the King Church had been profaned , the instrument was again slightly changed and placed in the east aisle of the Antonius Church. The predominantly romantically arranged instrument has 19 rows of pipes and a total of 33  stops by means of extensions and transmissions . The playing and stop actions are electric.

Gallery organ

In June 2016, the new gallery organ (main organ) was completed and inaugurated on June 26, 2016 by Dominik Meiering . The first planning for this instrument began in 2001. The neo-baroque predecessor instrument made by Seifert (Kevelaer) from 1955 turned out to be technically out of date and no longer restorable. About 70 percent of the pipe material could be reworked and reused in the new instrument. The symphonically arranged instrument that has now been created on the gallery has 107 stops (a total of 70 rows of pipes) on four manual works and pedals. 28 registers are octave extracts, 5 registers are programming and 12 registers are transmissions. The organ can be played from two mobile gaming tables . The ideophonic percussion registers marimba , carillon and vibraphone are among the special features of the instrument .

Fernwerk

In 2018 the organ system was expanded to include a swellable remote control unit . The dependent instrument was set up above the crossing dome and can be played from the fourth manual on the console of the organ system. It is located in an insulated housing, which was set up on a platform in the crossing tower directly above the dome opening. The sound enters the church through the dome opening and its volume can be regulated by horizontally arranged swell blinds. The orchestral remote work has 17 registers, which are generated from 8 register rows. As in the main organ, the wind chests were equipped with single-tone magnets (sinus system), which enables the remote control to be played with multiple manuals.

Bells

St. Antonius has a ring made of seven bronze bells that were cast in 1959 by Wolfgang Hausen Mabilon (Mabilon & Co., Saarburg). The bell is the fourth largest in the Archdiocese of Cologne. In the east tower hangs the largest bell with 5000 kg; the remaining six bells hang in the west tower (towards Barbarossaplatz).
