Christ the King (Düsseldorf)
Christ the King is a former Roman Catholic church in the Oberkassel district of Düsseldorf , which has been used by the Ukrainian Catholic Church , which belongs to the Greek rite , since 2003 . In addition, services of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Christ the King took place. The church was built in an expressionist style. It was profaned in 2010 and converted into a family center with a kindergarten.
history
The establishment of a further rectorate in Oberkassel was aimed for since the late 1920s. A church building association was founded in 1928 and the church was built between 1929 and 1930 by the architect Franz Schneider . The planned church tower was not built, except for the basement. The church was consecrated on September 28, 1930. Christ the King was promoted to rectorate in 1931, and in 1973 it finally became a canonical parish. The church survived the war with minor damage, but the windows were destroyed in 1942.
Due to the financial difficulties of the church, a profane re-use of the building has been considered since 2009. After the profanation was completed , the building was revitalized in 2014 with the move in of a 6-class daycare facility and a family center based on a design by the architect Thomas Pink.
The leading pastor, Michael Dederichs, described this as a "real stroke of luck". The church inventory is still used in a Polish Poor Clare monastery; the Way of the Cross and the icon of Mary were brought to the parish church of St. Antonius in Oberkassel. The three bells of the church are soon to be hung in a bell tower of the church of St. Maria, Hilfe der Christisten, in Lörick.

Christ the King was built in the expressionist style by the Düsseldorf architect Franz Schneider. The church was built in steel in the sense of the new building . Visually, the external impression of high aisles was sought, even if the ceiling does not have any internal supports. Large brick emblems were placed on the outside.
The campanile was only built in 1979. It stands free in the parish garden. In 1987 the "Christ the King Church" at Pastor-Busch-Weg 9 was placed under monument protection.
