Franz Schneider (architect)

Franz Leonhard Schneider (born April 23, 1877 in Eslohe , † 1948 in Düsseldorf ) was a German sculptor , architect and monument conservator .

Life

Schneider, son of the Esloh sculptor and saint carver Peter Schneider (1848–1922) and his wife Maria Anna Amalia Schneider née Weber (1848–1907), came from a family of picture and altar carvers. His father sent all of his seven sons to the Düsseldorf Art Academy . There he first learned portrait painting , then sculpture . At the age of 35 he studied architecture at the Technical University of Karlsruhe with Carl Schäfer. Schneider, who had a Catholic, conservative-bourgeois habitus, married Maria Anna Elisabeth Esleben (1881–1950), who bore him seven children, including the second child and first son, the future architect Paul Schneider-Esleben , who worked in the Düsseldorf architectural office in 1935 the father's first professional experience and worked with him. The sons Karl (1918–1975) and Egon (1924–1980) also became architects in Düsseldorf. In 1930 Schneider won the competition for the complete development of the Königsmünster Abbey in Meschede . The daughters Eva (1914–1945) and Maria (1918–1945) died in a bombing raid during World War II . In 1947 Schneider took over the restoration of Lembeck Castle , where he set up an office, which his son Paul continued in 1948, including the task of rebuilding there.

Schneider's grandson is Florian Schneider-Esleben , co-founder of the band Kraftwerk .
