The Velen is a water tower , a central location in the center of Velen in Münsterland stands.

Evidently since 1221 the castle was owned by the lords, later barons of Velen . The origin of today's castle goes back to the 14th century. The architect of the three-wing bailey was Ambrosius von Oelde . According to the plans of Johann Conrad Schlaun , the south wing was practically rebuilt in the years 1744 and 1745. Anna Theresia von Velen (1735–1775) brought the castle and rule to her husband Clemens August von Landsberg zu Erwitte , and the Counts of Landsberg-Velen have remained the owners since then.

From 1811 the castle was redesigned according to plans by August Reinking based on classicism on behalf of Count Johann Ignaz Franz von Landsberg-Velen . At the same time, an English landscape garden was planned by Maximilian Friedrich Weyhe .

In 1931 the castle burned down completely, but was rebuilt from 1933 to 1934 according to the old plans, but with major changes inside. In the palace gardens are Orangerie , Forsthaus, pheasant and Tiergarten received. Between 1935 and around 1944 the castle was occupied by a customs school of the Reich Finance Administration. During the Second World War the castle was used as a hospital, after the war it was also used as a retirement home. The customs school was revived in the 1960s.

From 1988 to 2018 the castle was used as a conference and event hotel under the name SportSchloss Velen . Under hotel director Thomas Schmitt (1993 to 2000), the Velen sports palace was selected by Capital magazine as one of the 50 best German hotels.
