Count Johann Ignaz Franz von Landsberg-Velen and Gemen , until 1840 imperial baron (* December 2, 1788, probably in Münster ; † September 19, 1863, probably at Burg Gemen , district of Borken , Münsterland ) from the noble family of the Lords of Landsberg was an entrepreneur in of the chemical industry , Westphalian and Prussian politicians and ruler of the Gemen rule .

Life

He was the son of Baron Paul Joseph von Landsberg-Velen (1760–1800) in Münster and Theresia Countess von Wolff-Metternich zur Gracht (1765–1805) from Bonn . Landsberg-Velen married Louise Friederike Countess von Westerholt and Gysenberg on April 21, 1813 in Velen ( Borken district ) . One brother was Engelbert von Landsberg-Velen and Steinfurt . His son and successor as the landlord of Gemen was Count Friedrich von Landsberg-Velen and Gemen .

As an entrepreneur, he founded the Luisenhütte , which he named after his wife, near his Wocklum Castle in 1812 . Ten years later he took a majority stake in the establishment of the chemical factory " F. Herold & Comp. " In Wocklum and, after Ferdinand Herold's departure in 1836, continued as " Freyherrliche von Landsberg Velensche Chemische Fabrick ".

In 1826 he became a member of the Westphalian provincial parliament , was deputy state marshal from 1830 to 1832 and from 1832 to 1858 state marshal. In this function he stood between the government and the MPs and acted in a balancing act on the issue of the Cologne turmoil . The same was true in 1830 when calls for state representation arose in the assembly. Landsberg-Velen succeeded in ensuring that the provincial parliament would forego a request addressed directly to the king and instead address this to the crown prince. In 1843 he announced that he would oppose "ex officio" any motion that would reveal a distrust of the king. Landsberg-Velen therefore prevented further demands for an imperial class constitution in 1833, 1841 and 1843. However, he pushed for an expansion of competencies as far as possible. At the beginning of the 1830s, for example, he demanded that the government be obliged to give “lectures” to the state parliament.

On October 15, 1840, he and his family were raised to the Prussian count , primogenitur from a noble marriage and tied to the possession of the class rule Gemen with the rule Velen and Raesfeld , all in the district of Borken (Münsterland).

In 1847 he became a member of the United State Parliament and in 1854 a hereditary member of the Prussian mansion , although he never took this seat. In 1857 he was appointed Royal Prussian Real Privy Councilor.
