Wocklum Castle is a moated castle in Balve , Sauerland . The system in the Orlebach valley goes back to a Saxon hill fort and a fiefdom of a certain Bernd von Düngelen . The Düngelen are a Westphalian noble family.

In the first half of the 14th century the noble family von Wockelheim (Wocklum) still sat there. The castle also belonged to the former Droste Hermann von Hatzfeld , who emerged as an opponent of the Reformation during the Truchsessian War .

Since it was acquired by Landdrosten Daniel Dietrich von Landsberg zu Erwitte († 1684) in 1656, the castle has been owned by the Counts of Landsberg-Velen . To protect the castle and its possessions, he founded a family entailment commission in 1681 .

Another famous son of the family was Ignaz von Landsberg-Velen and Gemen (1788–1863), who had the Luisenhütte (Wocklumer Hammer) expanded. Born in the castle, Dieter von Landsberg-Velen (1925–2012) was a German sports official and president of the Malteser Aid Service Germany (1982–1990). He was co-founder and from 1968 to 2001 president of the German Equestrian Association , and later its honorary president. In addition, Landsberg-Velen was for a long time Vice President of the World Equestrian Federation (FEI).

The Balve Optimum horse show has been held there regularly since 1948 , which goes back to Count Dieter von Landsberg-Velen and Gemen. Another major event is the country party .
