The Melschede Castle is a moated castle in Hovel , a district of Sundern in the Sauerland . In its present form it comes from the time of Ferdinand Freiherr von Wrede zu Melschede , who had it built between 1659 and 1669 as a four-wing complex. To the west of the castle is the Melscheder Mühlenbachtal conservation area . Otherwise the Sundern nature reserve surrounds the castle.

history

Melschede as a place was first mentioned in a document in 1281 as a bailiwick of the county of Arnsberg and was divided into two parts as a manor in the Middle Ages. There is a lowest house of a family (von) Melschede and a highest house of a family (von) Wrede.

In the lowest house a service man of the counts of Arnsberg, Hermann Vlecke receives, 1280-1285 advocacies . It was followed around 1300 by a Benkamp family who, from the middle of the 14th century, referred to themselves as "von Melschede" based on the place name.

The top house was given to Drost zu Arnsberg, Albrecht / Albert Wrede in 1364 as a thank you from the Prince Elector of Cologne for his services in acquiring the county of Arnsberg.

After the male line "von Melschede" died out, the lowest house came into the hands of the Amecker relatives of the Wreden family through marriage, who were able to buy the uppermost house from their relatives a short time later. This means that both houses are owned by the Wrede-Melscheder barons that still exist today .

Today's baroque moated castle was built from 1659 by Ferdinand Freiherr von Wrede zu Melschede as a four-wing complex. Since the builder Bonifatius from Trier died during the construction phase, the work by Nicolas Spantzl from Merano was completed in 1669.

Between 1820 and 1822, the north wing and the two flanking towers were demolished, and the palace was turned into an open three-wing complex. At the same time the valley will be transformed into an English park . Conversions from 1920 to 1922 partially restore the old appearance to the interior of the house and restore it to its present-day exterior.

On July 1, 2010 the castle was sold to an entrepreneurial family from Neheim-Hüsten.

Concerts and exhibitions are held in the castle. The registry office of the city of Sundern holds civil weddings in the castle.

There is a Förderverein Schloss Melschede eV which organizes concerts in the historic rooms of Schloss Melschede. In particular, young, talented artists are to be promoted with these concerts.

Manor

There was an estate district of Melschede, which was equal to a municipality. This was incorporated into the municipality of Hövel on September 30, 1928.
