coat of arms

Coat of arms of the former municipality of Hövel

Blazon :

In red on a silver three-mountain, a silver linden tree removed from two silver wings.

Description:

The linden tree stands for the older place name "Altenlinde" (Lindinon) and the three mountain or the hill for the current place name. The colors red and silver are taken from the coat of arms of the von Melschede noble family, who used to live in the municipality. The coat of arms was officially approved on November 30, 1962.

Melschede Castle

The castle was built between 1659 and 1669 by Ferdinand Freiherr von Wrede zu Melschede, Landdrost of the Duchy of Westphalia and electoral chief stable master . It was built as a four-wing complex by the master builder Bonitius from Trier . When the north wing was torn down around 1821, the palace became an open three-wing complex. After further renovations between 1920 and 1922, the facility is now used as a hotel and restaurant .
