Mining

In the early modern period until the 19th century, Bönkhausen belonged to an important Sauerland silver, lead and iron ore district . Mining can be traced back to the year 1450.

Extensive remains of the former mining can still be seen in the area today. The Elector Ernst tunnel is the deepest tunnel in the "Edler Stein" mine field . This tunnel is a drainage tunnel (hereditary tunnel). At the end of the tunnel there is still a pump that drained this shaft. This pump was connected to a water wheel in front of the tunnel via a rod. To ensure that there was always enough water for this water wheel, several reservoirs were created.

There are 2 other tunnels that used to be connected to the Churfürst-Ernst-Tunnels via a so-called art shaft. You can still see a very large ping on the surface today . There was also the "Ottilie", "Krähenberg" and "Düthenberg" mine fields . Several large heaps still exist in the area. One of these heaps is designated as a nature reserve Halden south of Bönkhausen .

On the northern edge of the village is the Bönkhauser See , which was previously used as a bathing lake and is currently a fishing water.
