history

Hellefeld was first mentioned in the Werden arable land in 886. Starting from individual farms, a village settlement developed around a church in the High Middle Ages . A first pastor is recorded for 1179. The old Romanesque church is dated around the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries. The baptismal font even dates from the 9th century. In the 19th century the church proved to be dilapidated, was demolished and replaced by a new Gothic building in the 1870s . Only the old tower remained.

As the main parish, the place became the ecclesiastical center for the surrounding villages. The parish of Hellefeld is also known as the "Old Testament" by the population, as it comprises twelve settlements analogous to the twelve tribes of Israel. In addition to Hellefeld, these include: Altenhellefeld, Bainghausen, Frenkhausen, Herblinghausen, Linnepe, Meinkenbracht, Schnellenhaus, Selschede, Visbeck, Weninghausen and Westenfeld.

From a worldly point of view, too, Hellefeld became a central location for some places. Since 1321 it was the seat of a court of the then sovereigns, the Counts of Arnsberg . Even after this area was transferred to Kurköln in 1368, Hellefeld was the court in the Duchy of Westphalia . The boundaries of the judicial district corresponded to those of the parish.

This tradition was reflected in the Hellefeld mayor's office, which has existed since 1827. This district included not only the area of the parish, but also the freedom Sundern and the city of Grevenstein . However, both places regained their independence after a short time.

On January 1, 1975, Hellefeld was incorporated into Sundern (Sauerland).
