The Catholic parish church St. Martinus is a listed church building in Hellefeld , a district of the city of Sundern , in the Hochsauerlandkreis , in North Rhine-Westphalia .

History and architecture

The community was first mentioned as a parish in 1179. The previous church was a cruciform vaulted basilica of the Berghausen type from the twelfth century. From this the simple tower was preserved. The current neo-Gothic hall church was built between 1874 and 1876.

Furnishing

  • The Romanesque, cylindrical baptismal font made of tin from the 12th century, adorned with heads, is one of its kind in Germany, along with the baptism in Würzburg Cathedral.
  • Romanesque smoke barrel made of bronze
  • A gilded silver monstrance from 1722
  • Figures of St. Martinus, Bishop of Tours and St. Liborius, Bishop of Le Mans. Both bishops are said to have been friends with each other.
  • In the left aisle are the side flaps of the high altar of the old church with the representations:

- closed: left: the ascension of Christ; right: Christ in heaven

- open: picture 1 of the birth of Christ; Picture 2 Christ is baptized; Picture 3 the wedding in Canaan; Picture 4 shows the Emmaus disciples

  • The church tower has three bells. The small bell (h ') was cast from bronze in 1432. The two large bells (f sharp 'and a') were made from cast steel by Buderus & Humpert in 1921. A klepp bell hangs in the roof turret.
