history
Endorf was first mentioned in 1191 in a document issued by the abbess of the Meschede monastery as a main courtyard Endrepe. In late medieval records, the court was included in the original endowment of the Meschede monastery. The peasantry existed until the last third of the 18th century. It comprised about 40 courtyards of various sizes. After lead ore and iron finds in Endorferhütte and Bönkhausen, the place developed into an ironworks and mining site. He was raised to mountain freedom by Elector Ernst of Bavaria. Mining ceased in the middle of the 19th century due to decreasing output. Agriculture became the main line of business until various farms settled in the middle of the 20th century; an industrial park was created. The influx of workers created new building areas.
On January 1, 1975 Endorf was incorporated into Sundern (Sauerland).

coat of arms
Blazon : "In silver a continuous black bar cross, accompanied by a blue ploughshare at the top right, and a blue mallet and iron crossed at the bottom left ." Description: The coat of arms goes back to an impression of a seal handed down from 1601. Ploughshare as well as mallets and iron symbolize the most important branches of business (agriculture and mining). The cross and the colors blue and silver are symbols of the former sovereigns, the Cologne electors and the Arnsberg counts. The coat of arms was officially approved on April 21, 1961. |
Culture and sights
Endorf is a holiday resort in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge nature park with a large network of hiking and circular hiking trails. In Endorf there is the local history and hunting museum “Alte Schmitte”, a former factory building, in which visitors are offered an insight into the world of mining in the Sauerland. There has been evidence of silver and lead mining since the middle of the 15th century. At the end of the 16th century, iron mines and smelting are documented. An old Spieker , in which the office for the mining was located, in which traces of the mining, such as a tunnel mouth hole, are visible, reminds of the time of mining . There has been a special mining trail since 2004 . In the center of the village is the historic Strackenhof , the oldest stone house in the Sauerland region of Cologne from 1634. Originally released for demolition, the house has now been renovated. The house has a Gothic pointed arch as a Deelentor, and a former bower with a fireplace. Today there is a meeting place there.
