Altenhellefeld is a district of the city of Sundern (Sauerland) in the Hochsauerlandkreis , North Rhine-Westphalia .

location

The recognized resort is east of Sundern. District road 6 as well as state roads 839 and 840 run through the village. The village is located in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge nature park, directly at the northern foot of the Großer Sonnenstück .

history

The place is mentioned for the first time in a deed of gift from May 1st, 1236. Count Gottfried III. von Arnsberg left the tithe in Altenhellefeld to the monastery in Rumbeck . In the early modern period, the place consisted of around 25 courtyards and supplementary houses. In essence, the original cadastre from 1829 also corresponds to the current location structure as it was in the 15th century. Even if Altenhellefeld was bigger, the place was politically, ecclesiastically and academically oriented towards Hellefeld.

On January 1, 1975 Altenhellefeld was incorporated into Sundern (Sauerland).

coat of arms

The town's coat of arms shows a silver bell of Saint Anthony as patron of the chapel in Altenhellefeld on a blue background. The colors blue and silver represent that the place belongs to the former county of Arnsberg .

Today's structure

The village still shows agricultural structures today, even if a structural change began in the 1960s, for example through the construction of hotels and leisure facilities. Between 1985 and 1993 Altenhellefeld won five silver medals in the state competition Our village should become more beautiful . Altenhellefeld and Hellefeld have been recognized as recreational areas since 1989. The Buddhist meditation house Vimaladhatu of the Buddhist community Triratna has been in the former Friends of Nature House "Am Sonnenstück" since 2001 .

The nature reserve Wacholdergebiet Hermscheid is east of the village. It was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) in 1993 . The NSG Hermscheid is grazed with sheep in order to preserve the open character of the juniper heather and the junipers .
