history

On April 15, 1286, Stemel, then name Stembule, was first mentioned in a document. At that time, Count Ludwig von Arnsberg handed over goods in Stembule to his castle keeper in Hachen, Hermann von Muldenbern, as evidenced by a transcript in a copy book from the 14th century. In a noble register there was an entry that Lambert von Steinbel had sold his goods in Steinbel (= Stemel) to Heinrich von Binolen in 1354. In 1403 Godert von der Reck is mentioned in a document as the first judge feudal lord. Godert von der Reck enfeoffed Heinrich von Binolen with the Stembole farm and estate. In addition to Stembule and Steinbel, the names Steimel and Stemele can be found in the first centuries of the settlement of Stemel. In the course of time, Stemel emerged from Gut Stemel. The Stemel estate still exists. From 2001 to 2002, apartments were installed in the buildings of Gut Stemel.

On January 1, 1975, Stemel was incorporated into Sundern (Sauerland).

After Hurricane Kyrill in January 2007, most of the forests in and around Stemel were severely damaged or completely destroyed, which has changed the landscape of Stemel extremely. Numerous wet wood stores were built.

coat of arms

Blazon :

In blue, the silver (white) tip of a boar pen over a triple stepped silver (white) shield base.

Description:

The stepped shield base is supposed to symbolize the place name (originally Stenbole = stone hill); The gentlemen von Thülen , who had long owned the Stemel estate for a long time, had a booze tip in their coat of arms. The chosen colors should indicate the affiliation to the old county of Arnsberg . The coat of arms was officially approved on November 30, 1962.

traffic

Stemel is connected to the RLG bus network by lines R25, S20, 432 and N5 . Stemel is on the Neheim-Hüsten-Sundern railway line , on which there has been no passenger traffic since 1977. The connection to Neheim-Hüsten train station is limited to bus traffic (September 2013). The re-establishment of the SPNV is included in the local traffic plan of the Zweckverband Nahverkehr Westfalen-Lippe and has been registered for the reorganization of the public transport requirement plan of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Several reports have shown that hourly operation after upgrading the infrastructure is possible and makes economic sense.
