The station Neheim-Husten in the Sauerland Neheim-Husten is located between the stations Wickede (Ruhr) and Arnsberg (Westphalia) on the Upper Ruhr Valley Railway Hagen  - Warburg (Westf) at an altitude of 162 m above sea level. NHN .

history

The station was opened with the section of the Upper Ruhr Valley Railway from Schwerte to Arnsberg on June 1, 1870 by the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahngesellschaft . At that time, the station was north on the edge of the still independent town of Hüsten, but almost as close to the Neheim town center. The entrance building that still exists today dates from the opening year.

Ruhr-Lippe Railway

The former "Kleinbahnhof" of the RLE, demolished in 2011

On May 1, 1898, the AG Ruhr-Lippe-Eisenbahnen (RLE) opened its line from Soest to Hüsten, which, as a narrow-gauge railway with 1000 mm gauge, received its own small station with reloading facilities on the forecourt of the station that has since been taken over by the Prussian State Railways . In 1907 the connection to Arnsberg followed, which was carried out in standard gauge , and in 1913 a section of the previous small railway line was also equipped with three- rail track . The RLE initially had only one platform at the level of the state railway building, the station building was further northeast at the level of the goods shed, where there were also two trestle pits until the narrow-gauge freight traffic was discontinued after 1913. In 1911 a new station building was built on the passenger platform, the old one was used for goods handling . The building from 1898 was demolished in 1979, and the building last used as a restaurant from 1911 was also demolished in 2011. In the direction of Arnsberg there was initially a double-track locomotive shed, from 1913 there was also a four-track roundhouse (removed in 1973, but now a double-track rectangular shed). After the Soest line was closed, it was converted into a terminus station, which ends at the former station building. As since 1907, there are seven tracks, the handover takes place on the Arnsberg side of the RLE track system.

Neheim-Hüstern – Sundern small railway

With the start of operations on the Neheim-Hüsten – Sundern small railway from Neheim-Hüsten to Sundern, the station reached a fourth line in 1900, which was initially operated by the West German Railway Company , but was also taken over by the RLE in 1978. The railway facilities are located southwest of the state railway along Kleinbahnstraße . There was and is the transfer station, the passenger trains went further west and ended at the platform in Neheim-Hüsten Röhrtalbahn near the state platforms , there was only one bypass and a corrugated iron shack with a service room. The Neheim-Hüsten West train station is located further in the direction of Sundern, already in the Röhr valley . The massive building of the station was abandoned and sold in 1978, it is still there with extensions.

traffic

Because of the industrial importance of both Hüsten ( Hüstener union ) and Neheim (metal and lighting industry), the freight turnover was considerable. It was significantly higher than at most of the stations on the upper Ruhr Valley Railway, and before the Second World War it was comparable in size to the stations in Barmen or Iserlohn .

With the discontinuation of passenger traffic and later also of goods traffic, the line to Soest was closed again until 1968. Passenger traffic to Arnsberg was stopped in 1964, and that to Sundern followed, except for a pair of trains in 1972. In 1977, passenger traffic was also completely stopped here. Both routes kept their freight traffic to this day. The routes are now operated by the RLG , passenger traffic only takes place on the DB's own Ruhr Valley Railway. The re-establishment of the SPNV on the Röhrtalbahn is included in the local transport plan of the Zweckverband Nahverkehr Westfalen-Lippe and has been registered for the reorganization of the public transport requirement plan of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Several reports have shown that hourly operation after upgrading the infrastructure is possible and makes economic sense.

Signal boxes

In December 1984, the previously existing three were mechanical interlocking "N f", "No" and "Nw" by a newly-built relay interlocking replaced, in turn, the term "N f" ( " N EHEIM Hüsten f ahrdienstleiter received"). The signal boxes in the Arnsberg , Freienohl and Meschede stations are also remotely controlled from this signal box .

Tracks

The station has two platform tracks. Track 1 is used by trains in the direction of Hagen and Dortmund, and track 2 by trains in the direction of Bestwig. Both platforms are currently 38 centimeters high and 295 meters long.

The RLE tracks to the west of the Westbahnhof were removed after passenger traffic was discontinued and are partially built over. The handover to Sundern takes place at the level of the old Westbahnhof.

As part of the “Modernization Offensive 2” of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the platform systems were modernized from 2016 on behalf of the DB subsidiary Station & Service. The previous central platform on platform 2 including the passenger crossings was removed and replaced by a new outer platform on the other side, which is reached via an underpass. This eliminates the need for the security post and eliminates the operational restrictions caused by passenger crossings on the same rails, so that in future two trains can stop at Neheim-Hüsten at the same time. The new outer platform was prepared for a possible reactivation of the Röhrtalbahn to Sundern, so that there is a platform edge for track 3 on the opposite side.

To create barrier-free access, the new platform on track 2 and the existing platform on track 1 were raised to a height of 76 cm above the top of the rail. Since the end of 2019 there has also been barrier-free access to the platforms using elevators. In addition, the city of Arnsberg wants to build a second P&R parking lot on the former loading street south of the train station. Work on this should begin in April 2016.
