geography

Westheim is 6 km east of Marsberg on federal road 7 in the Diemel valley . Neighboring towns are the Marsberg core town and Oesdorf, as well as Hesperinghausen and Orpethal on the Hessian side.

history

Westheim manor around 1860, Alexander Duncker collection

Westheim was first mentioned in a document in 1082 in connection with the Lords of Westheim. Westheim became the parish in 1150 when the Corvey monks founded a church. From around the middle of the 14th century, the Lords of Calenberg took the place of the Lords of Westheim, who lived in Westheim without interruption until they died out in 1813. After several changes, Westheim came into the possession of the Counts of Stolberg , today's von Twickel family .

Westheim has belonged to the secular rule of the German diocese Paderborn , originally in the duchy of Saxony , since it was founded . From the 14th century, the territory of the prince-bishopric of Paderborn ( Hochstift ) was formed in the Holy Roman Empire , and from the 16th century it became part of the Lower Rhine-Westphalian Empire . Westheim was part of the Wünnenberg office in the Unterwald district . In 1802/03 the bishopric was occupied by the Kingdom of Prussia . In Napoleonic times the place was part of the Kingdom of Westphalia , department of the Fulda . From 1815 Buke belonged to the Kingdom of Prussia, from 1871 it was part of the German Empire . 1945–1949 Westheim was part of the British zone of occupation , from 1946 state governed by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and from 1949 also by the Federal Republic of Germany .

The development of Westheim was shaped by epidemics, the effects of war and famine. These include the Soest feud , the plague , the Thirty Years War and the Seven Years War , which resulted in great hardship. During the Thirty Years' War, the "Lower House Westheim" of the Barons von Calenberg and part of the village went up in flames. After an epidemic in 1813, Westheim only had 496 inhabitants.

During the Second World War , the Klinke-Hartmann house was destroyed on October 3, 1944, and over 100 houses were badly damaged. The roof of the Protestant church was also destroyed. Six people were killed.

In the course of the local reorganization , which came into force on January 1, 1975, Westheim, which previously belonged to the Büren district , was incorporated into the town of Marsberg in the Hochsauerland district.

coat of arms

Blazon : “In gold (yellow) a striding black stag; Above that in the head of the shield in front an oblique green wheat ear and behind an obliquely left green oak leaf. "

The coat of arms was derived from the coat of arms of the influential ruling family, the Counts of Stolberg , who had a stag in their coat of arms. The wheat ear stands for agriculture and the oak leaf for the wooded area.
