In addition, Canstein is partially surrounded by lightly wooded valley flanks.

history

The Canstein area has been settled for a long time, which can be seen in particular in the "cultural monument former castle Schwedenschanze " east of the village and in Canstein Castle, which dates back to the 11th and 12th centuries. The “St. Laurentius Chapel ”has long been part of the village landscape.

It was not until March 31, 1945 that US soldiers passed through the village for the first time. The western area had already been occupied on March 29th. From April 4, Canstein had US troops billeted for three weeks. In the period that followed, there were several thefts and assaults by former prisoners. At the end of May the first German prisoners of war returned to the village.

During the Second World War 33 Cansteiners lost their lives as soldiers, most of them on the Eastern Front or in captivity and from their wounds. A man from the Reich Labor Service fell in Nuttlar.

On January 1, 1975 Canstein was incorporated into the new town of Marsberg.

Witch hunt

Considerable witch hunts took place in the Marsberg area . In the archives of the rule Canstein a voluminous file is No. 1296, in which documents from 19 witch trials are collected. In 1656 and 1658 nine women and one man were executed in witch trials . The outcome of a further eleven processes is unknown. In the trial documents there are references to these nine (of the ten?) Death sentences:

  • 1656 Edeling Gronen
  • 1656 Stone Clara
  • 1656 Friedrich Rehling's wife Trine
  • 1656 Thielen Anna from Leitmar
  • 1656 Gerta die Boltin (also Jutten Grete), Georg Noeckens (Georgen Norikens) wife from Udorf
  • 1656 Anna Möllers
  • 1656 in the application Gerta the Boltin are mentioned as executed:
    • Eva Bohlen
    • Eddeling Mronos (identical to Edeling Gronen? S. Above)

  • 1658 Elisabeth Hempelmann

Nature reserve on the edge of the village

A special feature of Canstein is that there are three nature reserves on the edge of the village. The northern part of the Klebberg nature reserve is located on the northern edge of the village, directly on the Zur Agatha Strasse road . The western part of the area begins exactly west of the edge of the village on the L 870 towards Gut Forst. On the southern edge of the village, directly west of the Kleppwiese road, is the An der Kleppwiese nature reserve . These two nature reserves are limestone grasslands . To the east of the Kleppwiese road , a little back from the road, lies the Auf der Eulenkirche nature reserve , a red beech forest with rare plant species.
