The Kleppe is a 7.6 km long orographic left or southwest tributary of the Orpe in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district in Hesse and in the Hochsauerlandkreis in North Rhine-Westphalia ( Germany ).

course

Two places are given as the source of the Kleppe in the north-western part of North Hesse :

  • The first source of the Kleppe is about 3.5 km east of Adorf , a district of the Hessian community Diemelsee . It is located on the Red Land (Hessian-Westphalian plateau east and south of Marsberg ) between Wirmighausen in the west and Vasbeck in the east (both parts of the municipality of Diemelsee) around 400 m east of Hermannshof at around 420  m altitude. From there, the 8.25 km river length is measured in the aforementioned map.
  • Another source, called Güthing , which is also considered to be the Kleppe origin, is located a little below Canstein (a south-eastern part of the Westphalian Marsberg ) near the ruins of the "Mühle am Güthing".

From its most distant source, the one near the Hermannshof, the Kleppe flows mostly in a north-easterly direction through the hilly landscape of the Red Land, which is mainly used for agriculture , with its upper reaches often being dry as far as Vasbeck or even Canstein.

After crossing the border with Westphalia , the Kleppe runs towards and through Canstein, on the southern edge of which is Canstein Castle . After flowing through the village, the stream passes the already mentioned source "Güthing". Finally , the Kleppe flows into the Orpe tributary of the Diemel, coming from the southeast, at a height of around 302  m . This results in a total height difference of around 118 m.

Flood

The Kleppe seeps away when it is dry before - as already mentioned - it reaches Vasbeck or Canstein. However, especially in the spring after the snow has melted, it can carry too much water with it for its small river bed , which can lead to floods . In 1963 the water of the Kleppe was even up to the altar of the St. Laurentius Chapel in Canstein. This water and the precipitation that falls on the Red Land feed not only the Kleppe source but also the Orpe spring, for example.

Catchment area and tributaries

The catchment area of the Kleppe covers 25.87 km². In addition to a few rivulets , the 4.95 km long "Bach vom Soldierbusch", which rises northeast of the 439  m high Soldier Busch Mountain, is often dry and flows into the right-hand side below Vasbeck, is its only noteworthy tributary.
