Kleberberg nature reserve

The Klebberg nature reserve with a size of 19.78  hectares is located in two sub-areas north and west of Canstein in the urban area of Marsberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis . The western area is intersected by highway 870. It was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) in 2008 with the Marsberg landscape plan .

The NSG comprises limestone grasslands with large bushes and red beech forest areas . The western area begins on the outskirts and leads along the road 870 to shortly before Gut Forst. The western area is only on the right-hand side of the street. Only where the beech forest ends on the left side of the street does an NSG area begin on the left side of the street. The northern smaller area also begins on the edge of the village.

The specialist information system of the State Office for Nature, Environment and Consumer Protection in North Rhine-Westphalia documents the NSG: “In the intensely used landscape around Canstein, the area with its high structural and biotope diversity is of outstanding importance as a living space. In addition to the rocks, woody structures and meadows, the species-rich poor pastures and limestone semi-arid grasslands are responsible for the high protection value. The area is a nationally significant part of a biotope network system of structured cultivated landscapes and limestone grasslands. "

Conservation measures

Areas belonging to the NSG were purchased by the North Rhine-Westphalia Foundation for Nature Conservation, Heritage and Cultural Preservation (NRW Foundation). The Association for Nature and Bird Conservation in the Hochsauerlandkreis (VNV) looks after the area on behalf of the NRW Foundation. A shepherd grazes the land. Since the 1990s, the VNV and the Biological Station Hochsauerlandkreis have also taken care of the NSG. In particular, blackthorn bushes and stick rashes were removed with a chainsaw and brush cutter .
