The nature reserve Auf dem Bruch with a size of 52.28  hectares lies west of Essentho in the urban area of Marsberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis . It was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) in 2008 with the Marsberg landscape plan . A former barracks and settlement for Belgian soldiers is adjacent to the larger southern part of the area. This area is now an industrial park and housing estate. To the west lies the FFH area Fürstenberger Wald (DE 4518-305) in the Paderborn district . To the north, the Ritzenhoff and L 549 premises border in the industrial area . In the east, the landscape protection area borders the Paderborn plateau with intensively used grassland. The northern part of the area is north of the L 549 at the Ritzenhoff company. In the west it borders the FFH area Fürstenberger Wald again. Otherwise the area is surrounded by the landscape protection area of Paderborn plateau.

description

The NSG includes flat, almost wood-free grassland areas which are used as pastures or hay meadows. Parts of the grassland are wet grassland and lean grassland with leanness indicators. There are also tall herbaceous corridors in the NSG. Two streams drain the NSG to the northeast. The streams are partly piped and straightened. Parts of the NSG are extensively managed. The individual meadows are partly separated by ditches. In the NSG you can only find single trees and bushes. There are a few sheds on the meadow. A larger wetland complex is located in the southern part of the area. The coherent grassland complex with its small-scale alternating areas of wet and lean grassland determines the value.

The NSG has had five to eight meadow pipit areas for years.

Protection purpose

The protection purpose of the NSG is, in particular, the preservation and optimization of an ornithologically significant wet grassland complex as a breeding, resting and feeding area for a number of endangered bird species.

Conservation measures

The Association for Nature and Bird Protection in the Hochsauerlandkreis (VNV) bought land in the NSG several times and leased more. The areas of the VNV are grazed with the club's own red high cattle. Some areas are mowed by the association and then grazed with cattle. The VNV repeatedly carries out work assignments in the NSG. In particular, garbage was removed for disposal, old fences dismantled and new ones built.

Impairments to the NSG

In July 2015, a contractor spread fermentation residues from a biogas plant on around 15 hectares of land owned by the city of Marsberg in the Bruchwiesen area . The city leased the area to a farmer. This had the requirement of the city to refrain from fertilization and to create fallow strips. These conditions were set because the area serves as a compensatory measure for the city. The city informed by the VNV gave notice to the tenant.
