from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Niederhof nature reserve with a size of 10  hectares is located west of Beringhausen in the urban area of Marsberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2001 with the Hoppecketal landscape plan . The NSG represents part of the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Area (FFH) water system Diemel and Hoppecke (Natura 2000-Nr. DE-4617-302) in the European system of protected areas according to Natura 2000 with a size of 588 hectares. The NSG borders in the south the former quarry there. The two parts of the Grottenberg nature reserve are located on the south side of the quarry . The nature reserve Unteres Hoppecketal borders directly to the north .

Area description

The NSG is a steep forest area with rocks and rubble on the northern flank of the Grottenberg on a diabase underground. The forest consists of red beech forest , where the former use as coppice can still be seen.

Protection purpose

The NSG is supposed to protect the species-rich forest there. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
