The nature reserve Südlicher Arnstein with a size of 33.5  ha is located southeast of Padberg in the urban area of Marsberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2001 with the Hoppecketal landscape plan . At the southeast corner of the NSG, the Grünland NSG nature reserve Östlicher Arnstein is directly connected .

Area description

The NSG is a forest area with former quarries on diabase underground on Mount Arnstein. In the NSG there are two former quarries and smaller areas with poor grass . In the south there is a break with a vertical rock wall over 25 m high. In the quarry floor there are ruderalized areas and a patchy dry grassland. To the north of the quarry there is a block of rubble heap overgrown with dry grass vegetation, which merges into a deciduous forest complex of beech and oak. In the west, on a steep slope, dry oak and hornbeam forests interspersed with beeches form a band interrupted by another small-scale quarry.

Protection purpose

As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”. The NSG was specially designed to secure a representative artificial outcrop for geological and geographic reasons, and also to secure ecologically particularly valuable sub-areas of the Arnstein that have remained undisturbed as a formative component of the special character and outstanding beauty of "Padberger Switzerland".
