Grottenberg nature reserve
The Grottenberg nature reserve with a size of 17.3 hectares is located west of Beringhausen in the urban area of Marsberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2001 with the Hoppecketal landscape plan . The NSG represents a sub-area of the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Area (FFH) water system Diemel and Hoppecke (Natura 2000-Nr. DE-4617-302) in the European protected area system according to Natura 2000 with a size of 588 ha. The NSG consists of two sub-areas . In the north, both areas border on the former quarry there. The Niederhof nature reserve is located on the north side of the quarry .
Area description
The NSG is a forest area on the south and east flanks of the Grottenberg . The forest consists of red beech forest , where the former use as coppice can still be seen. In the NSG you can see relics of the earlier ore mining, such as mine tunnels.
Protection purpose
The NSG is supposed to protect the species-rich forest there. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
