Eselstall / Mittelberg nature reserve

The nature reserve Eselstall / Mittelberg with a size of 68.3  hectares is located northwest of Giershagen in the urban area of Marsberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2001 with the Hoppecketal landscape plan . The NSG represents a part of the Fauna-Flora-Habitat-Area (FFH) water system Diemel and Hoppecke (Natura 2000-Nr. DE-4617-302) in the European protected area system according to Natura 2000 with a size of 588 ha.

Area description

The NSG is a forest area that slopes down very steeply to the Diemel in parts . The forest consists of red beech forest with red spruce areas . There are silicate rocks in the NSG.

Protection purpose

The NSG is supposed to protect the local forest. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
