It was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) in 2008 with the Marsberg landscape plan . The NSG is located on the eastern edge of the village. The Essenthoer Mühle is located on the south-east edge, with the reconciliation station for birds of prey and owls , where injured and sick birds are cared for. The NSG also borders the landscape protection area Randhöhen between Sintfeld and Diemeltal , the landscape protection area Staupketal and the landscape protection area Heidenpost / Steintwisten and Niedernfeld .

description

The NSG is located in a valley of the Rummecke brook that opens to the east. The Rummecke spring trough is also located in the NSG. In the southwest there is a slope area that slopes down to the Staupketal nature reserve. The valley slopes are sometimes quite steep. The NSG comprises a large grassland area and smaller forest areas. The upper to middle slope areas on the southern slope are dry, while the soils on the northern slope and in the valley floor are fresh to moderately moist.

A lime beech forest and spruce forest areas in the eastern NSG area as well as in the southwest NSG area "Auf dem Rüslo" a former quarry are located in the NSG. The NSG is strongly structured by orchards, field trees, hedges, rows of trees, individual trees and bushes. Several asphalt farm roads are in the area.

Most intensively used meadows and pastures dominate the grassland. The intensity of use ranges from intensively used grassland to extensive grassland and fallow land. On the lime-rich, shallow and south-facing slopes of the Rummeckal valley, there are limestone grasslands with numerous types of limestone grasslands. Also in the area of the former quarry "Auf dem Rüslo" there are small-scale limestone lawns on the former mining area.

Because of the high structural diversity, a large number of rare and endangered animal and plant species occur in the area. According to the landscape plan, the NSG is "of outstanding ornithological importance". Among the bird species are meadow and hedge breeders such as the red-backed shrike . The landscape plan documents the value of the protected area: "Due to the interlinked, small-scale structured biotopes, the area in its entirety is highly representative and therefore particularly worthy of protection in the sense of the protection goal concept for the natural area."

Protection purpose of the nature reserve

The NSG was designated for the maintenance and optimization of a grassland complex richly structured by orchards and field trees and as a breeding and migration area for endangered bird species in the structurally rich open country. Furthermore, to protect grassland habitats of varying degrees of moisture and the plant species that are dependent on them, some of which are rare and endangered. Also securing the outstanding beauty of this cultural landscape section. In addition, preservation of a species-rich beech forest and a quarry that is interesting from a regional perspective.
