The Kittenberg nature reserve with a size of 76.66  hectares is located northeast of Canstein in the urban area of Marsberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis . The NSG was expelled from the Arnsberg district government in 2000 . It was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) again in 2008 with the Marsberg landscape plan . The NSG has been one of two sub-areas of the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Area (FFH) Kittenberg (Natura 2000-Nr. DE-4519-302) in the European system of protected areas according to Natura 2000 with a size of 588 hectares since 2004. The other sub-area of ​​the FFH Area is the Schuberstein nature reserve to the west . These two nature reserves are only separated by the landscape protection area Oberes Orpetal and Kreisstraße 66.

Limestone forms the subsurface of the NSG . In the NSG there is the Kittenberg, the slopes of which drop steeply to the Orpe valley. The NSG includes a beech forest . In the northern part there are also oaks in the forest. In the NSG there are rocks up to 15 m high. There are old mining relics in the form of pings. The cultural monument Schwedenschanze is located in the southern tip of the NSG. The gray woodpecker occurs in the NSG .
