The semi-dry grassland nature reserve on the Dahlberg with a size of 10.81  hectares is located north of Westheim in the urban area of Marsberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis . It was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Arnsberg district government in 1985 . In 2008, the Marsberg landscape plan was again designated as a NSG. The NSG has also been designated as a Fauna-Flora-Habitat (FFH) Dahlberg (Natura 2000 no. DE-4419-302) in the European system of protected areas according to Natura 2000 . It is owned by the von Twickel family. In the west the NSG goes up to the Landesstraße 636.

description

The NSG comprises a limestone lawn with large areas of bushes on the moderately steep to steep western slope of the Dahlberg. In the upper part of the slope small limestone steps emerge and in the north of the NSG there is a stepped rock drop. About half of the dry grass is almost free of bushes and in excellent condition. The other half is moderately, rarely heavily bushed with blackthorn . In the north of the NSG there is a small, long-abandoned quarry with a sloping rock face in a field.

The specialist information system of the State Office for Nature, Environment and Consumer Protection in North Rhine-Westphalia documents the NSG: “With its abundance of herbs and orchids, the dry limestone lawn on the Dahlberg is a poor grassland that is highly worthy of protection. In 2011, 11 endangered plant species were identified. The area is of national importance in the biotope network system of limestone grasslands. "

Animal and plant species

Sand lizard in the NSG

In the NSG brooding backed Shrike . The grass species Fieder-Zwenke and Genuine Meadow Oats are mainly found in the NSG. In spring, the meadow cowslip is often a determining factor. Common species in the NSG include the small meadow button and three-tooth orchid. Around 35,000 specimens of the threefold orchid were counted in 2005. The population of the three-tooth orchid fluctuates. In other years there were holdings such as over 1000 individuals of this orchid. The eastern shoulder of the slope is surrounded by a dense, partly thorn hedge with z. Some overgrown trees were taken.

Conservation measures

A shepherd grazes the area. Since the 1990s, the Association for Nature and Bird Protection in the Hochsauerlandkreis (VNV) and the Biological Station Hochsauerlandkreis in the NSG have also been taking care of them . In particular, blackthorn bushes and stick rashes were removed with a chainsaw and brush cutter .
