Upper Diemeltal nature reserve

The Upper Diemeltal nature reserve with a size of 187 hectares lies east of the Diemelsee compensation basin near Helminghausen to the Wepa paper factory north of Giershagen in the urban area of Marsberg in the Hochsauerland district . This is where the Lower Diemeltal nature reserve is directly connected . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2001 with the Hoppecketal landscape plan . The NSG has been part of the FFH area of the Diemel and Hoppecke water system (DE 4617-302) with an area of 588 ha since 2004 .

Area description

The NSG is the Diemel river with its undeveloped floodplain in this area. Parts of tributaries of the Diemel, especially the Rhene , were included in the NSG.

Protection purpose

The NSG is supposed to protect the Diemel and its floodplain. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.

Impairments to the NSG

In August 2018 gold prospector was discovered panning for gold in the Diemel in the NSG west of the Wepa paper mill . The lower nature conservation authority of the district (UNB) was informed by the association for nature and bird protection in the Hochsauerlandkreis (VNV) to end this illegal activity. To the north-east of the Wepa paper mill , large quantities of crushed grain were dumped into a pond, the alder forest there, or into the meadow and bushes for game feeding at the end of October or beginning of November. With the game feeding, hunters wanted to attract wild ducks and wild boars to shoot them. In this area, trees were repeatedly felled and cut back in previous years in order to get a clear field of fire from a high seat. The VNV informed the Lower Nature Conservation Authority about the grievances in the NSG. Between Helminghausen and Padberg, an asphalt field path was renewed at the end of 2018 and the excavation of the old path with the asphalt tipped into the adjacent forest, into a wet meadow and onto the Diemel. This destroyed the habitat of plants such as yellow monkshood and blue monkshood . The VNV informed the Lower Nature Conservation Authority about the grievances in the NSG.
