history

The Romanesque church of Sant Andreu de Socarrats

The predecessor building of today's church was built in 953. This church was torn down and rebuilt in 1117 and consecrated by the Bishop of Girona Berenguer Dalmau. It was initially subordinate to the monks of Santa Maria in Besalú as an independent parish. In 1582 the church was independent of the Besalú monks and was annexed as a suffragan church to the parish of Sant Joan les Fonts . In 1968 the church was assigned to the parish of La Canya .

The original Romanesque spatial structure of the church with a central apse is well preserved or has been restored as best as possible. In the 15th century the building was destroyed by the earthquake in the Garrotxa and rebuilt. In the 18th century, the Romanesque basic structure was converted into a cross-shaped floor plan. At the same time, the original bell wall was expanded into a bell tower with four open sides. During extensive restoration work in 1982, the sacristy covering the apse was torn down. At the same time, the original masonry was exposed and re-hewn. Niche graves were removed on the south side. Through all of these measures, the church comes much closer to its original Romanesque structure.

Inside there is a simple, undecorated Romanesque baptismal font, an immersion pool with 70 centimeters inside, 90 centimeters outside and a height of 72 centimeters. On the east side there is a pre-Romanesque capital that belonged to the old predecessor of the current building. This capital is decorated with two human heads separated by flowers. The altar dates from the 18th century and is dedicated to Saint Isidore .

Individual evidence

  1. The article was based on the article “Sant Andreu de Socarrats” in the “Gran Geografia Comarcal de Catalunya” and based on information from the corresponding article in the Catalan Wikipedia and visual inspection (cf. the author's photographs of January 3, 2016 on Commons) added or updated, as the article in the “Gran Geografia Comarcal de Catalunya” does not reflect the state of the church after the extensive restoration of the church in 1982.
