The Schuberstein nature reserve with a size of 18.61  hectares is located north of Canstein in the urban area of Marsberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis . It was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) in 2008 with the Marsberg landscape plan . Since 2004, the NSG has been one of two sub-areas of the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Area (FFH) Kittenberg (Natura 2000 No. DE-4519-302) in the European system of protected areas according to Natura 2000 with a size of 588 ha. The other sub-area of ​​the FFH Area is the Kittenberg nature reserve to the east . These two nature reserves are only separated by county road 66 and the Upper Orpetal nature reserve .

Limestone forms the subsurface of the NSG . The NSG includes a beech forest . In the NSG there are rocks up to 15 m high. The gray woodpecker occurs in the NSG .
