Meerhof is a district of the town of Marsberg in the Hochsauerland district with around 1200 inhabitants.

Geographical location

Meerhof is a good six kilometers north of Marsberg in the Teutoburg Forest / Eggegebirge nature park . It is located about 25 km south of Paderborn and only six km from the Hessian border at an altitude of 410 m above sea level. The district has an area of 17 km² and a population density of 76 inhabitants / km².

The place is on the A 44 between Dortmund and Kassel at the Lichtenau junction (formerly Marsberg-Meerhof) near the Wünnenberg-Haaren motorway junction.

history

Meerhof is mentioned for the first time in 1170 as "Ostmere". In this document the Archbishop of Cologne, Philipp von Heinsberg, allowed the lord of the castle (Castellanus) Gottschalk von Padberg to build a monastery in "Breidelare". In 1279 the Bredelar Monastery established a Fronhof in today's Meerhof after several farmers had settled here. At the end of the Middle Ages , "Mere", like almost all places in the Sintfeld , was devastated. In 1416 the name "Meerhof" appeared for the first time. Only one courtyard seems to have been left of the medieval settlement. This is expressed in the change of place names. This "Meerhof" was also devastated several times.

1470 bought the monastery Dalheim Meerhof the monastery Bredelar from. In 1496 the purchase contract of 1470 was changed and Bredelar got half of Meerhof back. At the transition from Meerhof to Dalheim Monastery, Meerhof's economic situation was poor. Meerhof was completely devastated. Dalheim brought the manor to a new bloom. In the depopulated Meerhof, Dalheim promoted the access of settlers. The Meerhof field was significantly expanded through the involvement of the Hasselborn Curia. Dalheim had acquired this from the Cappel Abbey near Lippstadt in 1499 . The new village of Meerhof grew out of the settlement of the merged curiae Meerhof and Hasselborn. The early development of the village was strongly influenced by the Dalheim monastery.

Meerhof was part of the duchy of Paderborn from the Middle Ages until 1802/03 , became Prussian , was part of the Kingdom of Westphalia for a short time and then became permanently part of Prussia in 1815.

In terms of church, Meerhof, like the medieval "Mere", was assigned to the parish of Oesdorf until the 20th century . It was not until 1902 that the parish was closed . The Catholic parish church of St. Laurentius, newly built in 1914, bears the patronage of St. Laurentius like the Nuttler church, which is known as the Meerhof mother church .

Until the municipal reorganization, Meerhof belonged to the Büren district and has been part of the town of Marsberg in the Hochsauerland district since January 1, 1975 .

Attractions

Forest nature experience

A 3.5-kilometer circular forest path with 22 stations in the Eggegebirge nature park provides interesting information about the forest ecosystem . The hikers and walkers are encouraged to explore “their” forest through their own action , seeing , hearing and touching . For example, you can enter a charcoal burner's hut, look into ponds through a periscope or admire an artistically designed sculpture tree. The path is open all year round and can be walked independently.

The wind farm Sintfeld is for the most part on the surface of the district Meerhof. The largest private substation in Europe with 105 MW was built on Meerhof's arable land.
