Location of Helmern in Willebadessen

Helmern is a district of Willebadessen in the district of Höxter , North Rhine-Westphalia . The place is on the Helmerte , a tributary of the Nethe . It was first mentioned in a document in 1213. Until it was incorporated into Willebadessen in 1975, the independent municipality of Helmern belonged to the Peckelsheim office .

history

The Saxon monk and historian Widukind von Corvey reports in his Saxon history "Res gestae Saxonicae" of the existence of the "Civitas Elmeri under the Karlsburg" and that this Carolingian royal court was destroyed in 937. The citizens of Helmern took this first mention in 1987 as an opportunity to celebrate a local festival - the 1050th anniversary. At the same time, however, this first mention suggests that Helmern is much older.

Helmern (Elmeri) is made up of elan = strong and mari = water - "strong water". Accordingly, the Helmerte was a somewhat stronger river at the time, so that the meaning of the place name seems plausible. Helmern was settled long before Charlemagne's campaigns and played a strategic role in Charlemagne's plan to subdue the pagan Saxons and to Christianize them .

In the 13th century the village of Helmern belonged to the Count of Everstein County . From various documents it can be seen that in the 13th century much of the Helmersches land was transferred to the Willebadessen monastery , the Heerse monastery and the Hardehausen monastery .

Manor Helmern

Later, the castle and land in Helmern were largely owned by the von Niehausen family , who enjoyed a great boom in the 15th century. Members of this family were Burgmannen in Borgholz and at Peckelsheim Castle , together with the von Spiegel zu Peckelsheim family. From this time on, the local and home history of the small village of Helmern is closely linked to the history of the old knight family of those "from Spiegel zu Peckelsheim auf Helmern". Over the centuries, this noble family made great contributions to the establishment and economic development, not only of the municipality of Helmern, but also of the district of Warburg , as well as of the church in the diocese of Paderborn . The family is still based on the estate today.

An important part of Helmern was and is the manor ; Many families have found work and bread there for generations .

On January 1, 1975 Helmern was incorporated into Willebadessen .

In 2018 the community erected a memorial plaque for the painter Wisa Gräfin von Westphalen, who came from Helmern and worked there for life . The memorial plaque was created by the artist Raphael Strauch , who also lives in Helmern . He is represented with various works in the place.
