The Strackenhof is a listed building in Endorf , a district of Sundern in the Hochsauerlandkreis ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

The year of construction of the main house was determined after an investigation carried out by the Westphalian Office for the Preservation of Monuments in 2002 by dating the tree rings of beams and rafters to 1634, in the middle of the Thirty Years War . It is probably the oldest preserved stone house in the Sauerland in the Electorate of Cologne . The main house was built by Georgius (father) or Hermanny (son) Stracken. The name of the farm comes from the surname Stracken. Later the families on the farm used the name Carthaus or Severin, but this was still called Stracken in the village.

The Strackenhof documents the way people built and lived in central Westphalia in the 17th century. The house has an ancient commercial gable with a arched gate. The half-timbered gable sets protrude several times. Despite the generally ruinous state of construction, it was restored because of a number of historically worthy components. At that time the farm was not only used for agriculture, but also for mining and metal processing by the owners. The building is no longer in its original state. Conversions in the period around 1780 (extension by a cellar compartment), 1854 (conversion of the stables with relocation of the entrance to the right side of the eaves) and 1910 can be verified. The building was a Low German hall house , the middle hall could be accessed from the gable. The left side of the board is almost completely preserved. Here the cows stood under an ornate beam over nine meters long. Further back there was a seating area for the residents on the outer wall. The fireplace in the hall in front of the rear gable was spanned by a huge smoke platform about 2.4 meters high. The front end beam with a length of over five meters has been preserved elsewhere; at the ends and in the middle there are carved symbols, the meaning of which has not been interpreted. On the right front there was a room with a basement with a wall fireplace, the chimney of which let the smoke out through a hole in the front gable of the framework.

Interest group and monument protection

As early as 1999 and 2002 the Westphalian Office for the Preservation of Monuments and the Farmhouse Interest Group tried in vain to put the building under monument protection. After a demolition permit was granted at the beginning of 2007, the Stracken Hof eV interest group was founded on October 9, 2007 in order to preserve the building. The association began to raise money to buy the building and secure the roof, which was in danger of collapsing. After buying the building and securing the roof, the building was temporarily placed under monument protection on April 14, 2009 and finally on November 18. Funding for the renovation came from the North Rhine-Westphalia Foundation for Nature Conservation, Homeland and Cultural Care and other donors. A recommended archaeological excavation was unfortunately not carried out.

The courtyard was Monument of the Month in October 2009. On June 30, 2013, the Strackenhof was inaugurated with a celebration.

use

After the renovation, the courtyard serves as a meeting place for generations. The public building is available for cultural events such as lectures, readings, music events, exhibitions, general meetings, courses and seminars. Civil weddings can also take place in the courtyard.

For the Regional Project water-life-Land , the Court intended to show the further processing of iron in neighboring Brandenburg Sauerland. The farm should serve as an information center for the existing mining trail in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge nature park .

Trivia

According to tradition, the shift supervisor Hermann Stracke, who was probably the owner of the farm at the time, and Elector Max Heinrich put the mine in Berg Freiheit Endorf am Erbenstein back into operation around 1655. The mine was largely responsible for the industrialization of mining in this region.
