Meinolf Mertens

Meinolf Mertens (born June 4, 1923 in Bönkhausen , today Sundern , † May 14, 2009 there ) was a German local, state and European politician of the CDU .

Life

Mertens graduated from high school in 1942 and then attended the agricultural college. After graduating as a state-certified farmer, he passed the master craftsman examination.

He was also politically active in the field of agriculture. Mertens has been a member of the CDU since 1952. He was deputy chairman of the regional agricultural committee of the CDU Westphalia-Lippe and chairman of the district agricultural committee. Since 1962 he worked as deputy district administrator of the old Arnsberg district and since 1973 as chairman of the CDU in Sundern. Since 1956 he was a member of the district council, first of the Arnsberg district and then of the Hochsauerland district until 1984 , four years of which as deputy district administrator.

Mertens was a member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia from 1966 to 1980 (6th-8th electoral term). During this time he was always directly elected member of parliament for constituency 120 (Arnsberg).

In 1979 Mertens went to Brussels as a member of the European Parliament , where he belonged to the Group of the European People's Party . Among other things, he worked there as a member of the Environment and Agriculture Committees and was a member of the delegation for relations with South America. He was a member of the European Parliament until 1989.

In 1973 Mertens was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon and in 1981 the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class.
