Heinrich Klotz

Heinrich Klotz (born March 20, 1935 in Worms ; † June 1, 1999 in Karlsruhe ) was a German art historian, architectural theorist and publicist.

Heinrich Klotz studied art history, archeology and philosophy in Frankfurt, Freiburg, Heidelberg and Göttingen. In 1963 he received his doctorate from Heinz Rudolf Rosemann in Göttingen with a thesis on The Eastern Building of the Collegiate Church in Wimpfen im Tal : on Erwin von Steinbach's early work . After receiving research grants at the Central Institute for Art History and at the Art History Institute in Florence, he completed his habilitation in Göttingen with a thesis on Brunelleschi's early works and the medieval tradition .

After visiting professorships in the USA, he was full professor at the Art History Institute at the University of Marburg from 1972 to 1989 .

From 1979 he built the German Architecture Museum in Frankfurt am Main as founding director . He became internationally known in particular with the exhibition “Revision of Modernism, Postmodern Architecture 1960–1980”. In 1988 he was appointed founding director of the Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe and was also the first rector of the affiliated university for design . His aim was to enrich the traditional arts with the possibilities of modern media technologies. It should be taught, researched and presented in equal measure. In 1998 he gave up this post to devote himself to setting up the Museum of New Art Karlsruhe as a collector's museum.
