Beckum is a district of the town of Balve , which also includes Wocklum Castle . Beckum became known for his friendship with the French city of Roussay , which went back to an initiative of Beckum citizens. The partnership between Roussay and Beckum was notarized in 1985.

As of December 31, 2019, Beckum had 1,173 inhabitants.

history

The town of Beckum was first mentioned in a court record. On July 15, 1285, the disputed ownership of a piece of land in Beckum was decided. At that time there lived in Beckum a family of "Bekehem" who were often mentioned in the 13th and 14th centuries. Bekehem stands for "Heim am Bach". The name developed over the centuries via Bechem, Bechen, Beckhem, Bockum, Bychem and others to today's Beckum.

On January 1, 1975 Beckum was incorporated into the city of Balve.

Events

The annual shooting festival takes place on the first weekend in July. The children's shooting festival is organized by the Waldeslust social club. There is also a potato festival every year .

Parish

The Catholic Church in Beckum is consecrated to Saint Nicholas . The kindergarten is also sponsored by the parish.
