Dominik Maria Meiering (born January 31, 1970 in Rhede ) is a German Roman Catholic priest and art historian . He is the leading pastor of Cologne's inner city parishes and cathedral capitular at Cologne Cathedral .

Life

youth

Dominik Meiering grew up in Bergisch Gladbach near Cologne. There he attended the Catholic elementary school and later also the Dietrich Bonhoeffer-Gymnasium, where he obtained his Abitur in the summer of 1989. Following this, Meiering completed his basic military service in the Bundeswehr Chamber Orchestra (HMK II Kassel).

Studies and priest training (1990-2006)

Meiering studied Catholic theology , art history and philosophy in Bonn and Freiburg im Üechtland from 1990 to 1996 . On June 19, 1998, he was ordained a priest in Cologne Cathedral by Cardinal Meisner . From 1999 to 2003 he was chaplain in Neuss and from 2003 to 2006 in St. Agnes (Cologne) . In 2006 he received his doctorate at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn in the subject of art history with his dissertation Christo-Logie .

Youth pastoral care (2006-2015)

From 2006 to 2015 Meiering was city youth pastor and BDKJ -Preses in the city of Cologne. Here Dominik Meiering was entrusted with the conception and implementation of the youth pastoral center Crux , which is located in the Church of St. Johann Baptist (Cologne) . As a city and district youth pastor, Meiering campaigned strongly for the youth in the city of Cologne on various levels. During this time Meiering was also commissioned as a school chaplain for the Archbishop's Vocational College and the Catholic Secondary School on the Great Greek Market.

From 2008 to 2015 he took on the teaching position for theological basics / liturgy at the Cologne University of Music . From 2010 to 2015 Meiering was also district youth pastor of the Rhein-Erft district . From 2010 to 2015 Dominik Meiering was also appointed Rector ecclesiae at the last own church in Cologne, St. Gregorius im Elend in the southern part of the city. Dominik Meiering held a teaching position for homiletics at the seminary and deacon institute in Cologne from 2012 to 2015.

In his function as BDKJ-President he co-initiated the alliance “Nicholas come to our house” at the St. Nicholas Summit in 2011. The aim of the alliance is to bring the virtuous life of the Holy Bishop Nikolaus von Myra back to the public as an example.

Vicar General (2015-2018)

Meiering was introduced as the new Vicar General on February 22nd, 2015 in Cologne Cathedral by Archbishop Rainer Maria Cardinal Woelki . He is the successor to Stefan Heße , who was appointed Archbishop of Hamburg by Pope Francis. In addition to the office of vicar general, Meiering held the office of moderator of the Curia of the Archdiocese of Cologne. On April 14, 2015 Cardinal Woelki Meiering appointed resident cathedral capitular , on April 19, 2015 he was introduced to the office by cathedral provost Prelate Gerd Bachner .

During Meiering's term of office, many structural reorientations of the archdiocese took place under the title “New ways for pastoral care and administration”. In the course of this, the renditions were reorganized with effects on house and property management and the establishment of a central contact point for parishes. In addition, Meiering ensured the nationwide establishment of positions for administrative managers to support the leading pastors in all areas of pastoral care, as well as initiated the realignment of the foundation center, under which Cardinal Meisner's foundation can also be found.

Dominik Meiering was released from his office as Vicar General on April 30, 2018 at Archbishop Woelki's request, and on September 1, at his request, he took over the coordination of the "Sendungsraum Köln-Mitte", the Catholic Church in downtown Cologne. At the same time he is active here as a senior pastor.
