In 1972 Bachner was ordained a priest in Cologne Cathedral . Then he was chaplain for three years in the parish of St. Theodor in Cologne-Vingst as well as youth pastor in the dean's office Cologne-Deutz and deputy city youth pastor. In 1974 he became a member of the Archbishop's Council. For seven years he worked as a repetiteur at the Theologenkonvikt Collegium Albertinum in Bonn before he was elected director. He then spent twelve years at Regens at the seminary in Cologne. Between the summer of 1982 and the summer of 1983 he was a university pastor and mentor for lay theologians in Wuppertal. In 1986 Pope John Paul II awarded him the honorary title of a Papal Honorary Chaplain ( Monsignor ) and in 1996 the title of Papal Honorary Prelate . In 2001 he took over the management of the main school / college department in the Archbishop's General Vicariate. Since 2005 he has been the resident cathedral chapter in the Cologne cathedral chapter and was also deputy vicar general from 2005 to mid-2015.

In March 2015, the cathedral chapter announced that Gerd Bachner would take up the post of provost of Cologne as the successor to the retired Norbert Feldhoff . He also replaced his predecessor in 2015 as a member of the board of the Cologne Cathedral Cultural Foundation .

On September 4, 2015, Bachner, who is an experienced mountaineer, was (probably) the first Provost of Cologne to climb the more than 157-meter-high finial of Cologne Cathedral. A small, red painted figure with a mountaineering helmet that adorns the cathedral lattice in front of the north portal reminds of the incident.

Upon reaching the age of 75, Gerd Bachner resigned from the office of Provost on April 30, 2020.
