history

In prehistoric times, the Bürgstadter Berg was the seat of a fortified settlement (today forest), which was protected by the ring wall of Bürgstädter Berg . The first documentary mention of Bürgstadt took place in 1181. During the time of the tribal duchies, the place belonged to the Duchy of Franconia . Centgrafensitz was a town town until the 18th century , but in the late Middle Ages it already lost much of its importance to the neighboring Miltenberg , which was strategically located and protected by a castle and therefore became the seat of the Miltenberg office . The Roman fort Miltenberg-Ost was also partly within the Bürgstadt district.

In the years 1616 to 1618 and 1627 to 1630 there were witch hunts in Bürgstadt , which killed 91 people. In 1628, Centgraf Leonhard Gackstadt, an ex officio judge in the witch trials , donated a new high altar for the St. Martin's Chapel .

Up until 1803, Bürgstadt was under the rule of the Electorate of Mainz . By the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss , Bürgstadt was placed under secular rule. By 1816 the rulership changed three times before Bürgstadt became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria .

In 1862 the Miltenberg district office was formed, on whose administrative area Bürgstadt was located. As everywhere in the German Reich , the term district was introduced in 1939. Bürgstadt was now one of the 31 communities in the old district of Miltenberg . On July 1, 1972, this merged with the district of Obernburg am Main to form the new district of Miltenberg .
