from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tilman von Hachenburg (* around 1420, † around 1486) is one of the first bell founders known by name in the former part of the Archdiocese of Trier on the right bank of the Rhine . More than 40 bells are still preserved from his workshop, mostly in listed churches in the Westerwald area .

Life

Little information has survived about the life of Tilman von Hachenburg. It is unclear whether Hachenburg was his birthplace or that of one of his ancestors. Tilman probably learned the bell-casting trade in Cologne . Around 1450 he opened a workshop in Andernach and acquired citizenship.

In the mid-1460s, Tilman relocated its production to Montabaur and acquired citizenship there. From this workshop he delivered bells to churches on the right bank of the Rhine in the Archdiocese of Trier. The 15th century saw the high point of the introduction of the Gothic rib bell .

The workshop in Andernach was taken over by his journeyman Johann van Andernach, whose descendants carried it on until 1543. Until 1488, the churches on the left bank of the Rhine in the Archdiocese of Trier were preferably supplied from here.

Tilmann died around 1486. After Tilman's death, the workshop in Andernach took over delivery on the right bank of the Rhine.

In Hachenburg, Tilmannstrasse was named after him.
