Parish Church of St. John Baptist

The Catholic parish church of St. Johannes Baptist is a listed church building in Anrath , a district of Willich in the Viersen district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

Around the year 1010, the church in Anrath was separated from the Kempen mother parish of St. Peter by Archbishop Heribert and became independent. In 1019 the parish of Anrath was incorporated into the Benedictine abbey Christ Salvator and Maria Genetrix in Deutz, founded in 1002/1003. The close connection between Anrath and Deutz remained until the secularization in 1803. A church in the style of the Romanesque country churches was built in the 12th century. Due to the increase in population, this church no longer met the space requirements in the 19th century: at the beginning of 1897 it was demolished, and few parts of the inventory were preserved.

The three-aisled , neo-Gothic brick hall in six bays, with a staggered choir , was built from 1897 to 1898 according to a design by Josef Kleesattel . The west tower is crowned by an attachment with a pointed helmet. Inside, the ribbed vault rests on bundle pillars. Two octagonal pillars from the previous church made of Drachenfels quartzite were inserted into two wall pillars on the north and south sides.

The building has an interior height of 19.2 m, the tower is 78 m high ("upper edge of the floor to the ball below the weather valve"). A restoration of the old high altar is planned for 2019.

Furnishing

  • The figurative glass painting cycle in the choir dates from the construction period and was executed by the Düsseldorf workshop Gassen & Blaschke in the so-called Nazarene style. In the window in the choir of the central nave it shows the story of John the Baptist, in the north aisle scenes from the life of Mary, in the south aisle that of St. Josefs.
  • Altar shrines, organ stage
  • A Johanness bowl from 1668 made of chased silver. It bears the maker's mark IB (J. Braumann). It is a foundation of the Counts of Virmond at Neersen Castle for their Church of the Holy Sepulcher. It is one of the most important works of silversmithing in the Lower Rhine from this period.

Trivia

A football-sized section of a stone finial fell onto the sidewalk on the north aisle in March 2018. People are not injured.
