The Catholic Church of St. Michael in Waldbröl was built from 1705 and consecrated in 1706 . Patron is the Archangel Michael .

history

The money for the construction of the church comes from the result of a dispute between Protestant and Catholic citizens over the erection of a stone cross in the cemetery next to the Ev. Church on Corpus Christi 1704 went. The dispute ended with a fine of 3000 thalers for the Protestants . With this money, the new church was built by the 300 or so Catholics in Waldbröl. The church initially lacked a tower, which was only built 60 years later and equipped with two bells .

The independent parish of St. Michael was established in 1805. In 1879 the two bells were replaced by two new ones. During the First World War , on June 26, 1917, these were confiscated for the war economy ; two new bells could be consecrated on May 3, 1925. The larger of the two - also known as the "Peace Bell" - was dismantled on February 18, 1942 because of the Second World War . After the war, on Sunday, July 8, 1956, the Cologne Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Ferche consecrated three new bells.

The church was rebuilt several times, most recently from 1960 to 1964. The rectory was completed in 1855, it was a quarry stone building. It must have been one of the most beautiful houses in the village for the time.

organ

There are no documents about the construction of the first organ in the church. But this organ was probably very small. A new, better organ was procured under Pastor Hinkens. This was dismantled in 1942 and taken to the Seifert organ building company in Cologne. However, shortly before completion, the musical instrument was destroyed by bombs. A harmonium served as a replacement until 1953 . A new, two-manual Seifert organ with 15 registers was inaugurated at Pentecost 1953.

In 2004, preparations were made to build a new organ, as the organ from 1953 had meanwhile become prone to failure. It was given as a gift to the Catholic community in Graudenz (Poland), dismantled after Easter 2008 in Waldbröl and, after a thorough revision, inaugurated on November 9, 2008 in the local parish church of Maximilian Kolbe.

On December 2nd, 2004 the “Orgelbauverein St. Michael” (OBV) was founded to finance the new organ. It was built by the organ builder Fasen . The old organ loft was dismantled and the new organ set up on the left side of the altar island. It was put into operation on December 7, 2008 and consecrated by Rainer Maria Woelki , then Auxiliary Bishop of Cologne . It has 25 registers with 1436 sounding pipes (and 14 silent pipes in the brochure ) on two manuals and pedal , with fully mechanical register control and mechanical action mechanism .
