Manfred Melzer (born February 28, 1944 in Solingen-Ohligs ; † August 9, 2018 in Frechen ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Cologne .

After graduating from the State Quirinus Gymnasium in Neuss, Melzer studied philosophy and Catholic theology in Bonn , Freiburg im Breisgau and Cologne . From the beginning of his studies, Melzer was a member of the theological association VKTh. Burgundia in Bonn.

On February 1, 1971, Manfred Melzer was ordained a deacon by Auxiliary Bishop Augustinus Frotz . From 2006 to 2011 Melzer was the representative of the Bishops' Conference for police pastoral care in the state police. Since 2011 he was head of the episcopal sub-commission for missionary issues. Melzer was involved in numerous social projects in the Holy Land . After the Pope's acceptance of Cardinal Meisner's resignation , Melzer temporarily headed the Archdiocese of Cologne as the longest-serving auxiliary bishop until the cathedral chapter elected Stefan Heße as diocesan administrator .

Pope Francis accepted Melzer's early resignation on June 5, 2015, who was described as "health-related" in a press release from the archdiocese on the same day. Melzer died on August 9, 2018 and was buried on August 20, 2018 in the canon cemetery in the east choir of Cologne Cathedral.
