Auxiliary Bishop Johann Werner de Veyder

Johann Werner de Veyder (born December 2, 1657 in Neumagen / Mosel , † October 30, 1723 in Cologne ) was auxiliary bishop and vicar general of the Archdiocese of Cologne .

Life

After de Veyder had acquired the licentiate of both rights on November 16, 1682 in Pont-à-Mousson , he was ordained a priest on September 8, 1694 and was canon in Cologne that same year . Already appointed vicar general on January 17, 1695 by the Archbishop of Cologne, Joseph Clemens von Bayern , he also received the provost office in Meschede in Westphalia in 1695 . Since the archbishop had not received any ordination, he appointed de Veyder on April 30, 1698 as coadministrator in spiritualibus , which gave him the spiritual direction of the archbishopric. This abundance of power expanded when Pope Clement XI. was appointed titular bishop of Eleutheropolis in Macedonia and auxiliary bishop in Cologne on November 12, 1703 . A few days later, on November 16, 1703, he also received the papal indult to have a bishop and abbot donate his episcopal ordination . Thereupon the nuncio Giulio Piazza , who had his seat in Cologne, consecrated him on April 2, 1704 in the Jesuit church St. Maria Himmelfahrt as bishop. For the mission in Holpe he also donated a capital that yielded 60 Reichstaler annually  and could thus serve as a title of consecration.

Due to his position and the influence it caused, de Veyder was able to increase the family property considerably. As a result of this prosperity, he had the castle in Malberg near Kyllburg , whose reign had fallen to the de Veyder family in 1681, converted into a representative palace complex by the Düsseldorf court architect Matteo Alberti in the years 1706/07 to 1715 .

Since 1721, de Veyder's health deteriorated, so that on the quarter days of autumn 1721 he was unable to donate the ordinations of the clergy for health reasons and was represented by the nuncio Vincenzo Santini . In September 1723, de Veyder found himself unable to give the ordinations to all 120 candidates, so he again had to be represented by the nuncio, this time Gaëtano Cavalieri , who also took on the second ordination date at the end of September that year. The auxiliary bishop died that same year and found his final resting place in Cologne Cathedral . Its magnificent epitaph is on the south wall of the Marienkapelle.
