Karl Klemens Freiherr von Gruben (born November 23, 1764 in Bonn , † July 4, 1827 in Hildesheim ) was auxiliary bishop in Cologne and Osnabrück and administrator of the Hildesheim diocese .

Life

Karl Klemens von Gruben was a son of the electoral Cologne privy councilor Constantin von Gruben (1712–1788), who was raised to the rank of Imperial Knight in 1776. The mother's name was Anna Maria geb. von Vogelius (1736–1784) and was the sister of the electoral Cologne privy councilor Ignatius Ferdinand von Vogelius (1740–1784), whose splendid coat of arms epitaph is preserved in the Church of Our Lady in Worms . The parents acquired u. a. Gelsdorf Castle , where your alliance coat of arms marked 1763 is set above the passage. Her four sons Franz von Gruben (1774–1848), Royal Prussian District Administrator of Ahrweiler, Ignaz Friedrich von Gruben, Imperial Chamber Court Assessor in Wetzlar, Peter Joseph von Gruben , Minister in the Grand Duchy of Hesse and Karl Klemens von Gruben, Auxiliary Bishop and Vicar General in the Diocese of Osnabrück, and the two sisters Maria Anna and Ernestine von Gruben were raised to the status of imperial barons on May 8, 1805.

For on December 27, 1787 priests of the Archdiocese of Cologne consecrated , Pope named him Pius VI. on June 1, 1795 as titular bishop of Paros and auxiliary bishop for the Diocese of Osnabrück . After he was ordained bishop on September 6, 1795 by the Archbishop of Cologne, Max Franz of Austria , he became auxiliary bishop in the Archbishopric of Cologne on July 26, 1801. On December 24, 1824, he resigned his office as auxiliary bishop. After the death of the last Hildesheim prince-bishop Franz Egon von Fürstenberg , he was appointed administrator of the diocese of Hildesheim on August 11, 1825 as part of the reorganization of the Catholic Church in Hanover and since there was no cathedral chapter in Hildesheim, an activity that he up to exercised his death.

The Codex Gisle (13th century) came from his estate to the Osnabrück diocese archive .
