Josef Plöger

Josef G. Plöger (Josef Georg, born July 6, 1923 in Ense-Hünningen ; † April 22, 2005 in Cologne ) was a Roman Catholic auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Cologne .

After his ordination on February 24, 1953 in Cologne, he worked in various pastoral positions as well as academically. In 1967 he was supported by the University of Bonn with a thesis book of Deuteronomy Dr. theol. PhD. He was instrumental in the uniform translation of the Holy Scriptures, namely the Old Testament. Together with Josef Schreiner , he gave the commentary series New Real Bible from 1980 . Old Testament published by Echter Verlag in Würzburg .

As a pastor, he last worked from 1973 to 1975 as a pastor at Bonn Minster and as city dean in Bonn. Pope Paul VI appointed him titular bishop of Aguntum and auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Cologne . On May 19, 1975 he received the episcopal ordination through Archbishop Joseph Höffner . The bishop's staff , pectoral cross and bishop's ring were created in 1975 by the artist Hildegard Domizlaff . Raised honorary canon of Toulouse in 1975, Josef Plöger was also canon in Cologne. As auxiliary bishop he was responsible for the pastoral district south and at the same time episcopal vicar for liturgy and church music. Released as auxiliary bishop on April 15, 1991, he was also emeritus as canon in 1998.

On April 22, 2005, Josef Plöger died after a long illness.
